
He established a plant in Derry Church, Pennsylvania, which he eventually called Hershey.


Hershey sold his caramel company for $1 million in 1900 and concentrated on chocolate manufacture. He returned to Lancaster and continued experimenting with recipes, eventually developing a method for producing economical and tasty milk chocolate. He became enamored with the concept of manufacturing milk chocolate, which at the time was a rare and expensive indulgence. Hershey's big break came when he viewed a demonstration of chocolate-making technology at the 1893 World's Fair Exhibition in Chicago. He began his career as an apprentice to a candy manufacturer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then established his own confectionery company in Philadelphia. Hershey was born in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, and received a limited education as a result of his family's financial difficulties. Milton Hershey (1857-1945) was an American businessman and philanthropist who founded the Hershey Chocolate Company and the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania.
